Mercy Regional Cancer Center Supports Nor Cal Think Pink

Brenda Hockett is Surviving Breast Cancer and Encouraging Others Along the Way

“You have to have fun with it or it will just bring you down. You have to have a balance in your life. If I was just living for the day when I finish my treatments, I would miss the now,” she said. “One day I was in the shower and I ran my fingers through my hair and out some of it came.  There was no resistance to the hair coming loose, so my family and I went out into the driveway and I let my kids help remove the rest of it. Only a smiley face was left on top of my head, “ she said laughing out loud. Brenda is battling and surviving cancer that was discovered in March of 2009. “I had a crash course in cancer. Two weeks after I was diagnosed, I had a lumpectomy, then a port was put in to assist with the medication process and then I started Chemo,” Brenda said. She will finish her last Chemotherapy treatment Oct. 13, 2009, two days before the Redding community celebrates Think Pink Day in honor of breast cancer awareness. “That’s going to be a great celebration day,” Brenda said.

Cancer Resource Centers in Redding and Mt. Shasta
Information is an important tool in the treatment of cancer. Cancer Resource Centers at both Mercy Redding and Mercy Mt. Shasta provide informational support to cancer patients, their families and the general public. The Floyd Morgan Family Cancer Resource Center at Mercy Redding and Medical Library offer printed and on-line information, as well as trained and experienced staff to assist you.

Chemotherapy: Inpatient and Outpatient

Expert Medical Oncologists implement strategies for comprehensive patient care. Chemotherapy is usually administered on an outpatient basis. The Mercy Regional Cancer Center has recently expanded outpatient chemotherapy capabilities in response to growing community need. In our comfortable environment, friendly staff and compassionate, oncology-certified nurses work together to make sure that patients are as comfortable as possible while they undergo treatment.

Participation in National Research Brings Benefits for the Community
The Mercy Regional Cancer Center is a participant in national clinical trials that assess the effectiveness of new cancer treatments before they are available to the general public. That provides new hope for patients whom standard chemotherapy treatments have been ineffective. Working in collaboration with a National Cancer Cooperative Group or pharmaceutical company, Mercy Regional Cancer Center patients may qualify for participation in these ongoing efforts to advance safe and effective new treatments. For more information concerning clinical trials please call (530) 225-7471.
