We offer a variety of free classes to prepare prospective and new parents.

BREASTFEEDING BASICS*
This class is recommended for the 2nd & 3rd trimester of pregnancy and for new moms. This class will discuss breast changes during pregnancy, how to establish an abundant supply of milk, how often to nurse your baby, and how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk. Common issues about latch-on techniques, avoiding sore nipples, returning to work or school, and expressing and storing breast milk will also be addressed. If you are a new mom you are encouraged to bring your newborn to the class. Dads/partners are welcome. Click here to register for class.
Maternity Tour
This tour of the Maternity Center at Mercy Medical Center will give you the opportunity to see first-hand our labor and delivery rooms, nursery and postpartum areas and to ask any questions about obstetric services and programs we offer. The Childbirth Preparation class includes a tour of the Labor and Delivery, Post Partum and Nursery areas. Click here to register for class.
CHILDBIRTH REFRESHER
This class is designed for women and their partners who have taken a childbirth preparation class within the last three years and want a review of relaxation, breathing techniques, and current standards of medical care. Registration is required. Click here to register for class.
PREPARED CHILDBIRTH
This 6-week series of 2-hour classes helps prepare women and their partners for the labor and birth experience. The class covers topics from pregnancy to birth and postpartum with an emphasis on options for labor & delivery and coping strategies for pain management. Click here to register for class.
CESAREAN PREPARATION
This 1-night, 2-hour course emphasizes choices, procedures, anesthesia and postpartum recovery. Click here to register for class.
CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY SEAT
Learn how to place a child in a seat correctly, the safest place in a car for the seat to be, the proper installation of the seat, and the latest car seat laws. This class is a collaboration of Shasta County Public Health, Mercy Medical Center and the Injury Prevention Coalition of Shasta County. Low cost car seats are available for those who qualify. If you are taking other childbirth classes at Mercy Medical Center call 24-MERCY to learn how you can receive a car seat. Space is limited-Pre registration required. INFANT /TODDLER SAFETY (0-2 YEARS OF AGE)
This class is designed to teach new and expectant parents about home safety, swimming pools, and crib safety. Dads/partners and grandparents are welcome. Click here to register for class.
LET’S TALK PARENTING
In collaboration with First 5 Shasta, Public Health and Shasta Union School District, Mercy Medical Center will offer a series of parenting classes that will be repeated each fall and spring. These classes can be taken as an individual class or as a whole series of classes. Let's Talk Parenting focuses on families who are expecting a new baby and parents of children 0-5 years of age. The locations of these classes will alternate between Mercy Medical Center (fall series) and Monte Vista School (spring series). In the spring childcare will be provided at Monte Vista. Because Shasta Union High School is a partner in these classes, adult school credit will be offered to those who register for the classes. Door prizes and snacks will be offered at each class. ADVANCE DIRECTIVES WORKSHOP
This class offers valuable information about Advance Directives, their purpose and to prepare the right documentation for you. The instructors will answer your questions and address your concerns. This class is offered twice a year. Call for more information and class dates.
MALLWALKING PROGRAM
This program is in the Mt. Shasta Mall from 7-9AM Monday through Friday. Blood Pressures are taken, and miles logged Tuesday mornings. Call to register or for more information. Click here to register for class.
QUIT FOR GOOD
This is an eight-session program, aimed at helping you quit all types of tobacco use. The class takes place on two nights a week. Please plan on attending all the classes to gain the maximum benefit and increase your chances of quitting successfully. LEARNING ABOUT TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT
You will learn what to expect during your total hip or total knee replacement surgery and recovery. Medications, procedures, physical therapy and much more will be discussed. We encourage you to bring a spouse or caregiver with you to the class. Space is limited-Pre registration required. This is a FREE class, offered twice a month. The class is offered on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 12 pm - 2 pm and the 4th Monday from 6-8pm. Click here to register for class.
